Doberman Names That Aren’t Crappy

DOBERMAN names that are original uniqueDoberman Pinscher Names

Are you looking for good dog names for your new Doberman? Or do you want to change an older rescue dog’s name to something different?

I’ve collected this list of favorite Doberman names over the years.  These names have been selected for their popularity, originality, or for representing the qualities we love in our breed.  The Doberman dog looks tough, noble, elegant, athletic, and powerful, and as such deserves a good name to match. Some of these are famous Dobermans names or Doberman names from movies. And some are just unique or fun Doberman names for your puppy.

Whatever you do, please try not to give your dog a “people” name, no George or Mandy, etc. It’s a personal pet peeve of mine when people give their dogs “people” names. Dogs are special animals and therefore, deserve special names. They deserve a majestic, strong, or interesting Doberman name. I’m sure you’ll find a name here you like.

What makes a good name for Dobermans?

Keep in mind when choosing a name that it’s a good idea to pick a name that has 2 or 3 syllables. This makes it easier for the dog to clearly understand and learn their new name. Also, don’t choose a name that sounds like a common obedience command. This may be confusing to the dog. For example, if you name him Spitz, he may hear SIT.

funny doberman name tag king of fartsIf you want to change your dog’s name (which you can do at any age), start off by combining the old name with the new name. For example, if you picked up a Doberman at a dog rescue and it had the name Fido that you wanted to change to Conan, here’s how you go about it. Start calling your dog Fido-Conan, both names said together. In time, your dog will associate the new name (Conan) as his and you can then just drop the old name (the boring Fido gone).

Lastly don’t forget to get a Dog Id Tag with your cell phone number. If your dog gets lost or runs away, this will help you get your dog back sooner. These dog tags are silent if you don’t want to hear them. And for extra protection or fun why not get a  Saint Benedict Protection Dog Tag?

  1. My handsome Red was Kaiser Von Birgehof (Emperor of Mountaindale-His breeder lived in a town called Mountaindale) I lost Kaiser to a horrible gastric torsion episode 40 years ago. I have never owned another dog since. It broke my heart and hurt me so much-I would only ever own a Doberman. But after that happened to Kaiser, I just couldn’t.

My daughter was 5 at the time and came up w the name Red Cheese. Red bc he was a red dobe. And “we all LOVE cheese”! To her it was a no brainer! 😏

  5. I bought a red male Doberman we named him “Bo” just spelled it as Bowe his middle name is Allen to make his name as interesting as he is. I couldn’t stop thinking his sister she is fawn and absolutely gorgeous so I went the very next day and bought London Kate her name suites her because she is so elegant. I’m certain she deserves to wear a pearl collar 😉

    • My Doberman had a unique name. She was Princess Fluffy! I thought it would be funny to have someone over and call out “Here Fluffy” and they would expect a little white fluffy dog, but instead it would by my Elegant Black/Tan female dobie running like a Gazelle. She was absolutely the best dog ever. Not a mean bone in her body, but I do know she was my protector. She died when she was 10yrs old 3yrs ago. We just added a new dobie pup to our home this week. We are very undecided on her name. She is red. Any suggestions?

          • I adopted a black 3 legged male named Duke in my early 20’s. Later after getting married, my husband bought me a black/rust 8 wk old female pup that I named (AKC) Prince’s Foxy Lady Eva (Eva). She died at 12, and I was heartbroken. Found a 6 month old holdover that was never picked up from the breeder, named her Gracie…a gorgeous chocolate color. Lung cancer at 6 yrs old. Next was a black/rust female again (King Solomon’s Dixie Trixie), and after 11 yrs, another (now Casino Hill’s Queen of Mischief). Mischief (it fits her SO WELL!!) is now 4 yrs old, and my mobility service dog (I fall a lot). Blessings, hope you pick the PERFECT name!

        • I had a dobbie named Miley. She was a sweetheart. I loved to my heart. I want her back. She died when she was 10yrs old. It’s been a few months. Now we have have a min-pin. Black/rust color. We named her Pokey. You do not want her around a cat. She will attack a cat or anything smaller then her or the size of her. Miley was so gentle, friendly, and loved kids. She was a great protector! Now that she’s gone, it doesn’t feel right at all.😭😣. I can just see her right now in Pokey’s eyes. Pokey on the other hand, she is friendly too. She loves to play ball. She jumps like a deer. She has never been around snow in till Christmas. She loves the snow not but she get really cold becayse she is part chuwawa. I love her to my heart. AKA: Cross my heart, hope not to die!😂

  9. I lost my Doberman years ago to cancer and her name was Staffords Amber Delight, Amber for short. As you all well know, she was a true blessing to us and everybody who came to see us. I’m currently seeking another love and it’s quite difficult. I’m torn between getting a female or male. However, if I get a female, her name will be Ember Delight. Ember for short and a tribute to Amber.

    I have just recently rehomed another Doberman , a bitch this time she is very frail and doesn’t even know ANY commands which to me is so tragic considering how intelligent Doberman’s are ! What a waste however the point is she is currently called Skye which tbh I can’t stand as she is NOT blue and she is NOT from paw patrol but I am struggling terribly on a new name !

    • How about Cleo short for Cleopatra–one of the coolest, smartest, most courageous queens in history? Not only did she survive murder attempts by her brother and his thugs, she was Greek but yet still became Queen of Egypt one of the richest countries of her time. She also had Caesar and his greatest warrior Marc Anthony, Rome’s bigshots eating out of her hand and managed to frustrate the hell out of that wimp Octavian and made him look like a fool as well. A brave and beautiful name for a brave and beautiful bitch.

      Which one would be good for him

    • Love Jagger! It was an option for our black and rust male Doberman but we named him Onyx because of the spiritual meaning of Black Onyx…a powerful protection stone that absorbs and transforms negative energy and helps prevent the drain of personal energy. It is said to aid in the development of emotional and physical strength and stamina, especially when needed during times of stress or grief. Not sure if a stone can do that but perfect name for our Dober.
      He’s our first Doberman and we truly adore him. He is such a smiley goof ball and always makes us laugh. He helped heal the pain of loosing our Golden to cancer and is transforming negative attitudes and fears towards Dobies with everyone he meets. Now we need a name for our female black and rust puppy.

  14. i have a male black and tan named Little Shot Of Whiskey River. Whiskey for short. When we got him he just seemed to take all my cares and worries away just like that song whiskey river. And at other times i would come home and feel like i needed a shot of whiskey just to face the mess hes made that day. Then about two years later we got our female red named Foxtrot the Rakish Rogue. Foxtrot or Foxy for short. I wanted to get 3 dobes and keep the theme of whiskey tango foxtrot (WTF). Seems appropriate sometimes when owning dobes….WTF! The Rakish comes from her cropped ears. One droops a little giving her a very rakish or debonair look. The Rogue comes from her rebellious, outlaw personality. I love my dobes so much! the most peculiar breed ever.

    • Cool names all, Chance. I heartily agree with you in the “WTF” Department. Fang, my beautiful, sweet 5 year old black and tan boy is my first Doberman. I’d always had large breed male dogs–either German Shepherds or German Shepherd/Yellow Lab half breeds. I’d lost my last 2 boys within a year and a half of each other and was so broken hearted I swore I’d never get another. Then my vet convinced me to try again with a Doberman. Honestly, I have never known a more fascinating or a more frustrating animal. He is so different from any other dog I’ve ever known it’s almost like he’s a different species. I am completely in love with him but he also drives me insane. I told my vet “thanks for setting me up with such a weirdo dog” and he laughed and said Dobermans just have strong “personalities” which is why he thought a Doberman would be a perfect match for me. Uh Huh. I take him with me everywhere I go so he’s more like an appendage than a companion and I don’t know how I could live without him, however, first time Doberman owners should be prepared for some serious high maintenance, extremely oddball behavior and completely different training methods. Fang is a truly fabulous doggie, but WTF???? He is certainly a handful.

      • Ive got a 15 month old Serbian Dobberman. Like yourself I take him everywhere I go. He’s like my shadow and when I open a draw or a cupboard his nose goes straight in. What a character, I love him to bits he really makes me laugh. He throws the ball at me when he wants to play and if I don’t play he goes off looking for trouble. When he finds something that he knows will get my attention he will bring it to show me what he’s found then run off with it. He’s crackers, he sits on my knee with his head on my shoulder snoring down my ear. He’s certainly very affectionate and can’t get close enough. I love him that much I am going to collect a bitch end of the month. Dobermans, who would have 1?

        Reply
          • Me too! I’m on my first Doberman, a black & tan male who just turned 6 years old April 15 and I am still all fascinated by what an all out charming weirdo he is. All my previous dogs were German Shepherds, fabulous dogs every one, and I considered myself an experienced large breed tough dog owner. I would’ve never considered getting a Doberman if my vet hadn’t convinced me it would be the perfect dog for me, and he was right. But honestly, what a nutty, sweet, pain in the ass dog! He’s like a different species of animal altogether. I am curious as can be–what the heck is a Siberian Doberman?

She’s 4 yrs old, is my trained (ongoing, for 3 yrs now…my example dog, as I help train them for vets) service dog, but is constantly into everything…only at home w/o her vest on. Out in public, she’s a well-behaved lady!!

  18. I always like leaning towards German names and paying tribute to their lineage as well. We named our Black male Ziegen. Ziegen means “goat” in German. Dobermans are very strong, sometimes hardheaded (like a goat) dogs, so I found it appropriate. Ziegenbock (actually my fav beer) also has a goat/ram on the [black and tan] label of their bottle and one of the females on his maternal line was named Shiner Bock and the breeder had names all her studs with Z names, so his formal name was Ziegen Bock and it worked out perfect all around.
    My dad named his black male Zebulon (from the same breeder as Ziegen), Zeb for short. Zebulon Brockway is the father of the American prison system and Dobermans have been used as guard/prison/police dogs.
    Also Rosten for a red male (Rosten means “red” in German).
    Like the name Zeppelin for a black female (or male). Led Zeppelin actually had a song called Black Dog and “Led Zeppelin” actually refers to the Hindenburg, which was the infamous German airship that went down like a lead balloon when it caught fire.
    Raymond (German name for protector of the home). If you had a red male he could be named Raymond Reddington ;0)
    Varick (German name for Protecting ruler)
    Jager (which is NOT my fav liquor) is a German name that means Hunter, which seem appropriate, considering Dobermans’ high prey drive. Also Jagermeifter is BLACK liquorish flavored German liquor.
    …sorry for the long post.

We received them with their names, and I don’t believe in changing a rescues name unless 1 you don’t know their name, or 2 the name is inappropriate, disrespectful, or not even a name. Our 2 current rescues are:

    Xena: black/tan female cropped
    Mannie: black tan male natural

  22. I have had Dobermans my whole life as well as my wife who also had Dobermans her whole life. From my experience dogs in general seam to respond better and adapt more quicker to, two syllable names. They stand out more to the Dobermans receptors. My number one Doberman that stands above the rest was named,
    Hymmie: pronounced (Hi-Me) 2004-2012
    black/tan male
    Some of my other babies:
    Debo: Dee-Bo black/tan male
    Dutches: red/tan female
    Diablo: black/tan male
    JuJu: (Jew-Jew) red/tan female
    I don’t mind other people using these names if they are looking for a good name for their baby. My pups would have be flattered to have other Dobermans named after them. They truly are the best breed/ creatures on earth. I will never reuse any of my dear dobermans name for any future dobermans because to me there will always only be one Hymmie, JuJu etc. God Bless all the Doberman owners out there, please just love, spoil, and cherish them every second of every day, don’t ever take your time with them for granted.

  25. I am glad you enjoyed the story of how Fang got his name, Jaki. No doubt just a weird and sort of cool coincidence, but it really happened like that. I didn’t mean to imply that Fang, my sweet, crybaby Mama’s boy has any sort of mystical powers although I realize it might come across that way. I sure hope he doesn’t since he’s so willful that he gives pushy, overbearing dogs a bad name, which apparently, is a common Doberman trait. But totally recalcitrant notwithstanding, you couldn’t find a sweeter, friendlier dog. Shiny as a new penny and gorgeous to boot.

  26. So, no comments on the name “Fang?” I love it, but it is nothing like a name I’d be likely to choose. My previous 2 dogs (both massive German Shepherds–Fang is my first Doberman)) were named “Eddie” and “Baby.”

  27. I’d lost my dog in a tragic way and my heart was so crushed I said I’d never get another. Several months later, my vet called and said another of his clients owned two female Dobermans, sisters & litter mates, one red and one black, and one male (unrelated). He said all 3 were superb dogs and that he was familiar with several puppies from previous litters and that all were healthy, intelligent, good tempered, obedient and really good looking dogs. Both the females were pregnant by the same male and the owner was very picky about to whom he sold his puppies but the vet had called the owner and spoken so highly of me that the owner would grant me first look at the puppies due to be born in a few weeks. That night I had a dream that I already got the puppy who was able to talk. The dream puppy told me his name was “Fang” and that he would be my dog. I asked Fang how I would recognize him and he told me not to worry, he’d let me know. The two sisters bore their respective litters 3 days apart and had 19 puppies between them. I’d told he owner I wanted a male. He allowed me to come over to choose my puppy at three weeks and proceeded to place a box containing 10 adorable puppies of each color in my lap. How could I choose? Then a little black and red guy clawed his way out of the box to my lap and promptly curled up for a nap. I said “I guess this is my dog.” Fang is 4 years old now and I adore him, and love his name, but didn’t really choose it. Great name, though

      • Thank you Sheila. Fang is over 6 years old now. He is the most spoiled dog on the planet and irritates the hell out of me every day, but we are so tight it’s like we have ESP. And, despite his fearsome name, he is absolutely the sweetest dog I’ve ever known and during his lifetime he has done a great deal to disprove the idea that Dobermans are scary, dangerous dogs.

  38. We recently lost the most incredible beautiful girl at only 7 years old. Her name was Tess, but we often called her Tessie or Tessie-girl. We have a new female and her name is Ember (Emmy). I loved Lexi, but couldn’t convince my husband. I also like Cairo (Kairo, or Kyro – shortened to Kai). Love J names like Jade, Jayda and Jayla. Also Layla, Roxie, Jett, Zola, Tia, Tash, Jace, Mika, Vega, Sloane, Sophie and Devon. I like Jackpot and Blackjack (both shortened to jack or jax) It really depends on the dog’s personality. I was nervous when we got our first doberman, but she was so smart and loyal I can’t imagine life without one now.

My husband and I have a 2 year old red male named Panzer, an 18 month old black female named Kora, we had an 8 year old fawn female named Neka, who we lost to complications from being abused and over bred by her previous owners and we’re getting another red male pup who we haven’t named yet. My husband likes Hans. I don’t.

    • We lost our 7 1/2 yr old red male in June due to DCM, his name was “Spirit”. He was such a goof ball with the grandkids, we always said we should have named him Scooby doo. In the end we realized “Spirit” was befitting of his kind heart. The only dog in my 50+ years that truly touched my soul. Miss my boy every day, my heart will NEVER be the same.

  41. We had a lovely dobe called Sultan and he didn’t anyone or anything, not even baby birds that got inside our place. So I don’t think you can generalize about their aggressiveness. Now we have another 1 year old dobe called Pasha and he’s still very pup-like and so affectionate but like Sultan treats the world as his friends. But is so smart and love able.

  45. My fiancé and I have a 1 1/2 year old black and tan female named Addison, Addie for short, that we rescued when she was 3 months old. She’s the first Dobe either of us have ever had and she is just the best. Super smart and loyal, she even learned to smile with her teeth showing by watching me. The first time she did it I thought she was baring teeth at me lol She is just the sweetest thing ever.

    We are going to pick up a black and tan male pup this afternoon and we are super excited, but since we don’t know him we haven’t been able to pick a name.

    A few ideas we were tossing around:
    Jackson
    Ramses
    Wilson (for Seattle Seahawks Russell Wilson)
    Asher
    Rune
    Nova
    Quasar

We still have a red and tan female, Beth, she is sweet and loving and is 11. We are thinking about getting another male pup soon and will possibly call him Bob or Steve or Frank, not 100% sure of a name yet.

    • I always wanted to name one of my dobies Steve because I thought it would be hilarious to yell out Steve at a dog park or dog beach and see how many confused looks I would get. Bob is a good one too!

  51. I am thinking about getting a Doberman. I’ve never had one before but from all the “Awesome, Great, Cool” I’m getting from up there, I think they will be the PERFECT dog for me. I’m thinking about names… Hmm.

    * Prince (Male)
    * Zippy (Male)
    * Boomer (Male)
    * Sky (Female)
    * Pepper (Female)
    * Pixie (Female)
    Let me know what you think! Any suggestions?

    Reply
    • Make sure you do your research before getting a dobe. “Awesome, great and cool” are not enough to decide if a breed is a good fit for you. Dobermans are very smart, very hard headed dogs and they are not for everyone. I have seen far too many dobermans at rescues and shelters because people thought they were the perfect breed or thought they were awesome, great, cool or tough looking. Please don’t do this amazing breed a disservice by getting one for the wrong reasons.

  54. We just adopted a new baby boy-black and tan. He already knew his name was Ozzie-so we had to keep it. But my boyfriend is insisting we spell it Ozzy- after the infamous Ozzy Osbourne- lead singer of Black (get it?) Sabbath who became more famous after biting the head off of a bat onstage. Our Ozzy bites anything and everything he can get his sharp little teeth into. We also have another black and tan rescue- the sweetest girl ever. She came with the name Rizzo- but it has evolved to Brizzie as Rizzo was too hard for her sweet nature. She is lovingly mothering Ozzy. Our old girl Kaitlyn, or as we fondly refer to as Kate, is 9 and still going strong- but not enjoying “sharing” her bed with the new “intruder”. We’ve also had Monty- who was Kate’s mother and Kate’s litter mates- Leon Redbone- a red male and Sadie. In the past he had Dollie and I had Chaz.
    My favorite bumper sticker states- “This in not a dog- it’s a DOBERMAN”. Thank you for this site- what fun!

    1. Kizzy Black/tan
    2. Amber Red/tan. (litter mates)

    3. Sasha. Red/tan.
    4. Bridget. Black/tan
    5. Ginger. Black/Tan
    6. Rosie. Black/ tan
    7. Mina. Blue/tan
    8. Leala. Red/tan
    9. Belle. Red/tan

    Rosie was a Pound puppy, Bridget was a registered therapy dog. Leala & Belle rescue-litter mates
    Mina, detected tumor in my breast 12 years ago, she saved my life.

    My Belle was just Dx with Osteoscarcoma ……

    • I’m quite surprised no one has mentioned my new puppy’s name…CHANCELLOR!! I have a name I’ve been hiding in my pocket for awhile and just the right Dobe.I will call my next champion pedigreed Dobe GENERAL JUSTICE!! I had a fabulously Grand and Championed pedigreed German blood Dobe named Kaiser that lived for 13 years. We called him Cowhead cuz of his big head and paws when he was still growing into his massive 115 lbs size as a full grown Dobe. He was the most AWESOME animal I have ever known. I’m not just saying that cuz he was mine, he truly amazed and impressed every person that met Kaiser.

My first dobe we found skin and bone wandering the streets of Belfast in really bad shape, I was one year old at the time and inexplicably decided to name him Boover (I couldnt say Boomer) he was a beautiful black and tan boy about 18 months when we found him. We nursed him back to health, we got him another dobe companion at 3 years old, Maya, a 2 year old chocolate girl, we rescued from a shelter. I have an 11 month old girl now, black and tan, named Loca because she is completely bonkers, her best friend is my boyfriend’s rottweiler Diablo (I dont really like the name, hes such a softie, it doesnt really suit him).

I didn’t realize how perfectly that name fit him, showing me he was a fighter, until I almost lost him due to internal bleeding after I got him neutured because he had VWD and we didn’t know it even though I had all his blood work done before his surgery. I strongly recommend everyone having the VWD test before breeding or any type of surgery for there doberman. My red female I named Athena after the goddess of war and wisdom and boy is she smart, I taught her to whisper and how to open doors! They are my children and I love them as such!

    Other choices were: Cedric, Ari, Zac, Ruffo and Danko (among dozens of other possibilities!)

We call him Survivor because he’s always getting into scrapes and wandering away from his mom. A friend just picked out a red male and she named him Titan.

My fawn boy was Gus(short for a good ole german name Gustaf) My black kids were Tia Maria(my favorite coffee liqour), Brutus Beefcakes(aka Brutus) and their son Satan, which didn’t even come close to his personality, so we called him Big, he was 114 lbs of wuss. Helped my friend name her fawn rescue girl Isie (was Sadie). Don’t know about my next ones, hopefully Reba lives a lot more longer, she is almost 12 now!!!!!

  154. Our first one was Rusty – not very original then we named the current one Snoopy. People love it when they meet him as hes huge and when they ask what his name is and I tell them Snoopy they have a little chuckle about it. I love the name though and think its very typical of Dobes with their human traits and funny ways about them.

    But all of mine each have answered to about six different names. Bunny, pumpkin, stupid (only when acting that way), beezer, peanut…the list goes on and on. But my two right now both answer to snuggle-head.

  165. I think that named a Doberman some manly name is kinda silly. Look everyone at my Doberman “Rambo” he is a prime example of a stereotypical name for a guard dog breed. My female red dobies name is Ginger *she is red, and those of you that have lived in Hawaii will know that there is red ginger. I think that you can scare people that are already scared by the breed, by giving some *Rambo* name. Just my two cents worth
