Most doberman owners are familiar with the movie, “The Doberman Gang” from 1972.  It’s a classic and fun movie featuring dobermans who were trained to rob a bank.  But the doberman actually appeared in an earlier movie, also committing a crime. In 1946, the movie, “It Shouldn’t Happen To A Dog” was made.  World War 2 had ended, and soldiers and war dogs returned home.  With human and canine vets back, Hollywood created the first movie featuring the doberman, maybe to profit from this breeds popularity or status as a war-dog  hero. Here is a video overview of the doberman breed. The video discusses the doberman temperament and general personality.  It emphasizes the importance of socialization and obedience.  Dobermans are of the working dog breed group. They need plenty of physical and mental stimulation. Give your doberman variety of chews and toys for mental stimulation and regular daily rigorous exercise.  A walk around the block is not sufficient for this athletic breed.  They need to be able to freely run.  One of the benefits of having two dobermans together is that they can exercise each other. My dobes get plenty of exercise…

On February 14 and 15, the 2011 Westminster Kennel Dog Show took place in New York.  Created in 1877, this was the 135th show,  making it the oldest purebred dog show.  The dogs entered are judged against their breed standard. The doberman has won the Westminster Best In Show four times: 1939, 1952, 1953, 1989. As usual the Westminster Dog Show attracted  PETA, the controversial animal rights group. They protested outside the event holding signs that read “Breeders Kill Shelter Dogs Chances”. In 2010, PETA protestors actually made it onto the show ring, rudely interrupting the best in show round. …

Confused about ear taping and posting? Many people have questions on taping doberman ears or doberman ear posting so I felt this post was needed. My previous post on doberman ears generated a lot of emotional comments. A common concern is that the ears won’t stand. It may be a case where you need to keep re-posting them for weeks or months.  When in doubt, keep re-posting the ears. The DPCA (or Doberman Pinscher Club of America) has an article with photos to help guide you on taping puppies ears. Here are two videos to help you learn what’s involved…

Ramsey is a beautiful black Doberman who is quite popular on YouTube. Ramsey has a buddy who is a chihuahua named Pablo. Together the two dogs are cute to watch. People don’t usually imagine an intimidating looking Doberman having a tiny chihuahua pal. On a similar note, here’s a picture of my Doberman, Zoe with another unusual roommate, a white lop-eared rabbit named Bon Bon. They didn’t play together, but the fact that my Doberman didn’t consider Bon Bon a snack is pretty cool.
